Tinubu Set to Unveil 2026 Budget Before National Assembly on Friday

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the National Assembly on Friday, 19th December 2025, marking a key step in Nigeria’s budget process.

According to a formal communication from the National Assembly’s Clerk’s office, the presentation is set for 2:00 p.m. in Abuja. The letter, signed by Essien Eyo Essien on behalf of the Clerk, Kamoru Ogunlana, also set security and access arrangements for the event. Accredited personnel have been directed to be at their duty posts by 11:00 a.m., while non‑accredited persons were advised to stay away from the National Assembly complex on that day due to restricted access.

The annual budget presentation is a constitutional process where the president lays the government’s spending and revenue proposals for the upcoming fiscal year before lawmakers for review, scrutiny, and eventual approval. Lawmakers will refer the bill to relevant committees in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, which will examine, hold hearings, and possibly amend the proposals before passage.

The 2026 budget is expected to outline the federal government’s economic priorities, including projections for revenue, recurrent expenditures, capital expenditure, and strategic sectors such as infrastructure, security, education, and healthcare.

Observers say the presentation will also set the tone for fiscal policy direction in the coming year as Nigeria continues to tackle economic challenges such as inflation, security concerns, and efforts to grow the economy. Following the formal presentation, the National Assembly will begin detailed deliberations before sending the approved appropriation bill back to the president for assent.

The budget presentation is one of the most anticipated events in the nation’s fiscal calendar and underscores the cooperation between the executive and legislative arms of government in shaping Nigeria’s public finances.
