Obey Supreme Court judgement, give local govt their allocation- Tinubu tells Governors

President Bola Tinubu has urged state governors to respect the Supreme Court’s ruling and immediately release funds meant for local government councils across the country. He made the call during a meeting with members of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum at the State House, Abuja.

The President emphasized the importance of grassroots governance and said that failure to grant local governments their full allocations undermines democratic development. He noted that local councils are critical to delivering basic services and development directly to the people.

“I am charging you to adhere strictly to the constitutional provisions and the Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy,” Tinubu said. “Local governments must be allowed to function effectively and receive their due allocations directly.”

The President expressed concern that despite the clear ruling by the apex court affirming financial autonomy for local councils, many state governments still withhold or mismanage the funds, stalling development at the grassroots.

He urged the governors to support a system that empowers citizens through transparent governance at all levels. Tinubu added that strengthening local government institutions would improve service delivery, especially in rural areas.

The President’s appeal comes amid ongoing discussions on federalism and restructuring, with local government autonomy remaining a key point of contention.

The Nigerian Governors’ Forum, in response, assured the President of their commitment to collaborate on reforms that will enhance governance and improve the welfare of Nigerians.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to uphold the rule of law and support institutions that ensure accountability and good governance.
