The Federal Government has granted final approval for the development of the Ondo Deep Sea Port, opening the way for the project to become a major maritime gateway for Nigeria and the wider West African region.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State said the green light for the port comes as the project nears a key phase in its realisation, with expectations that it will unlock significant economic and trade opportunities for the state and beyond. The port is expected to ease pressure on existing seaports in Lagos and serve as an alternative hub for imports and exports.
Aiyedatiwa highlighted that the approval marks a key milestone in positioning Ondo State as a strategic player in the maritime sector, aligning with national goals to expand Nigeria’s blue economy and enhance its status as a regional trading centre. He said the port’s operations will not only boost regional connectivity but also attract investments in related industries such as logistics, manufacturing, and free trade zones.
Announcing the development on Monday, the Chairman of the Ondo State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (ONDIPA), Mr. Boye Oyewumi, confirmed that the Federal Executive Council had granted the much-awaited licence. This makes the Ondo Deep Sea Port one of the few ports with federal approval to operate in Nigeria.
According to Oyewumi, the port, when operational, will decongest existing ports in Lagos and provide an alternative gateway for import and export businesses, especially for the South-West and parts of the North. He also said the port would serve the larger West African market.
“The approval is a major milestone. It positions Ondo State as a strategic hub in Nigeria’s blue economy roadmap and will bring massive economic benefits to the state and the country,” Oyewumi said.
