As the festive season approaches, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has called on state governors to strengthen security measures across the country to ensure a peaceful Yuletide.
In a letter addressed to all governors, Ribadu stressed the need for proactive steps to prevent threats such as banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism that often escalate during the holiday period. The NSA noted that intelligence reports indicate increased movements by criminal elements seeking to exploit the season’s festivities and gatherings.
He urged state governments to collaborate closely with security agencies and local vigilante groups to intensify surveillance, particularly in crowded public areas like markets, worship centres, motor parks, and entertainment venues. Ribadu also advised the activation of emergency response systems and early warning mechanisms to swiftly address any security breaches.
The advisory further emphasised the importance of community engagement in intelligence gathering and urged citizens to report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
“In the spirit of the season, we must not allow criminal elements to disrupt peace and endanger lives. Security must remain a top priority, and the cooperation of state governments is essential,” Ribadu stated.
The NSA’s message comes amid recent concerns over rising security threats in some regions and ahead of increased travel and celebrations expected during Christmas and New Year.
Governors have been encouraged to convene emergency security meetings with stakeholders in their respective states to review and reinforce existing strategies aimed at protecting lives and property throughout the holiday period.
