Lagos partners NIOB on planning, sustainable development

The Lagos State Government has announced a partnership with the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) to improve physical planning processes and drive sustainable urban development.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, disclosed this during a courtesy visit by NIOB executives to his office. He said the collaboration would promote standard practices and support the state’s efforts to control building collapse and unregulated development.

Olumide noted that building professionals must align with government policies to ensure safe and orderly growth. “We welcome the builders’ support in planning enforcement and public education,” he said.

The commissioner said Lagos remains committed to involving professional bodies in shaping urban policies. He urged NIOB to intensify advocacy among its members and the public.

NIOB Lagos Chapter Chairman, Prince Adeniyi Onabule, led the delegation. He praised the state for its recent planning reforms and expressed the institute’s readiness to support the government.

“We are open to collaborations that improve safety, planning, and sustainable development. Our members will contribute to achieving the state’s vision,” Onabule said.

He also called for more engagement with professional builders in site monitoring and training, stating that many disasters could be avoided through expert supervision.

The two parties agreed to form a technical committee to outline their joint goals and implementation framework.

Lagos continues to face rapid urbanisation challenges. Officials say strategic partnerships with professional groups like NIOB are crucial to creating safer and more liveable communities.
