FG Declares Kidnappers, Bandits as Terrorists

The Federal Government has officially designated kidnappers and bandits as terrorists. The move aims to strengthen legal actions against those involved in violent crimes across the country.

Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), announced the designation on Friday in Abuja. He said the decision followed a court order that classified these groups under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Fagbemi explained that the rising wave of kidnappings, armed banditry, and related violence demanded tougher measures. “These criminals have inflicted fear, displaced communities, and disrupted lives,” he said. “They now fall under the same category as Boko Haram and ISWAP.”

He added that the classification empowers security agencies to treat kidnappers and bandits as enemies of the state. This will enable stronger counter-terrorism efforts, including prosecution, asset seizure, and surveillance.

The declaration followed several calls from state governors, security experts, and civil society groups demanding a more decisive approach to the crisis. Many states in the North-West and North-Central have suffered repeated attacks from armed gangs, with thousands killed or abducted over the years.

With this move, the Federal Government seeks to expand the scope of counterterrorism laws to address internal threats more effectively. Legal experts believe this step allows faster trials under terrorism courts and removes legal loopholes that have delayed justice.

Security agencies are expected to step up their operations across affected regions. The government also called on citizens to support efforts to restore peace and protect communities.
