Federal Government to Reopen Schools Shut Down Over Insecurity

The Federal Government has announced plans to reopen unity schools shut down due to insecurity across various states. The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, disclosed this on Friday during a media briefing in Abuja.

Mamman said the government has assessed the security situation in affected areas and found it stable enough to resume academic activities. He added that reopening the schools aligns with the administration’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted education for all Nigerian children.

“We are working closely with security agencies and state governments. The safety of students and staff remains our top priority,” Mamman stated. “We’ll reopen the schools in phases after confirming each location is safe.”

Over the past two years, several Federal Government Colleges, mostly in the North-West and North-Central zones, were closed following frequent abductions and attacks by bandits. Parents and education stakeholders had urged the government to provide better security and resume learning in the affected areas.

The minister noted that the ministry had developed a monitoring framework to track safety compliance in all unity schools. He said officials would conduct physical inspections and submit reports before final clearance is given for reopening.

Meanwhile, the government also plans to increase funding for school safety infrastructure. This includes perimeter fencing, CCTV installations, and training for security personnel posted to schools.

Mamman urged communities to support the initiative by reporting suspicious movements and maintaining collaboration with law enforcement to prevent future attacks on schools.
