LG Autonomy: Govs Urged to support Tinubu

Governors have been urged to support President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to grant full autonomy to local governments, as the debate over financial independence for grassroots governance intensifies.

The call came from civic groups and political analysts who believe Tinubu’s administration can reform the local government system if state leaders cooperate. They said the current structure, where governors control local council funds, hinders development and fuels corruption.

During a recent media briefing in Abuja, Executive Director of the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), Hassan Musa, said, “Tinubu has a unique opportunity to fix the local government system. But without the governors’ support, the reforms may stall.”

The Nigerian Governors’ Forum has resisted full LG autonomy in the past, arguing that the 1999 Constitution gives states oversight responsibilities. However, critics insist this arrangement undermines accountability and weakens service delivery at the grassroots.

A constitutional lawyer, Bisi Akinlade, said, “The president must use political will and public pressure to drive the change. Without local government autonomy, development will remain lopsided.”

Tinubu has consistently advocated for reforms in local government financing and operations. In recent meetings, he emphasized his commitment to giving councils financial independence to enhance grassroots development.

Analysts warn that without support from governors, the reforms may face legal and political obstacles. They urge the federal government to work with the National Assembly to amend key constitutional clauses blocking full autonomy.

Many Nigerians hope the reforms will improve governance, reduce poverty, and strengthen democracy at the grassroots.
