Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has praised the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu for his bold role in establishing the Western Nigeria Security Network, also known as Amotekun. He described Akeredolu as a visionary leader who prioritized regional security and took firm steps to protect the South-West.
Aiyedatiwa made the remarks during a tribute event held in honour of the late Akeredolu in Akure. He said the Amotekun Corps remains a testament to Akeredolu’s courage, foresight, and commitment to the safety of his people.
“He stood up when many doubted it was possible,” Aiyedatiwa said. “Today, Amotekun is not just a security outfit, but a symbol of resistance against insecurity in the South-West.”
He noted that Akeredolu’s leadership style was defined by action, justice, and service, particularly in times of national uncertainty. According to Aiyedatiwa, his predecessor’s contributions extended beyond Ondo, shaping national conversations on federalism and state policing.
The governor pledged to sustain and strengthen the Amotekun Corps, assuring that his administration would uphold the ideals Akeredolu stood for. He also called on other South-West governors to deepen collaboration on regional security.
Many dignitaries attended the event, including members of the Ondo State executive council, traditional rulers, civil society leaders, and political stakeholders. All commended Akeredolu for his legacy, particularly the creation of Amotekun, which they said had greatly reduced crime across the region.
Aiyedatiwa urged the people of Ondo to continue supporting the security outfit and honour the late governor’s memory.
