Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, are in a heated disagreement over the handling of a N30 billion relief fund meant for the South-West. Their clash comes as political alignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Makinde accused some regional leaders of diverting the funds meant to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal for residents. He stressed that transparency and accountability must guide the use of such public resources. While he didn’t mention names, Fayose quickly responded, claiming Makinde’s comment targeted him and other leaders involved in distributing the funds.
Fayose fired back, saying Makinde lacked the authority to question the process and accused him of using the issue to score political points. He claimed the governor had not shown leadership in managing federal interventions in Oyo State.
Sources close to both politicians suggest that the rift runs deeper than the relief fund. Makinde, seen as a rising force in South-West politics, is reportedly building alliances for 2027. Fayose, a vocal figure in the PDP, is also seeking relevance ahead of the elections.
Observers believe the fight may divide the party in the zone if not resolved early. Party elders have called for calm, urging both sides to put public interest above personal ambition.
The South-West PDP, already battling internal tensions, may face more cracks if the controversy continues unchecked.
