The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has intensified surveillance operations to track terrorists fleeing their camps following recent US airstrikes in northern Nigeria. The military said the strikes disrupted several terrorist hideouts, forcing many fighters to scatter across remote areas in search of cover.
A senior military official confirmed that intelligence reports showed increased movement of insurgents across forest routes in Borno, Yobe, and parts of Kaduna. In response, troops under Operation Hadin Kai and other joint task forces have been placed on high alert.
The DHQ said it was working with international partners to monitor escape routes and prevent regrouping. It assured Nigerians that the military remains committed to eliminating terrorism from the country. Drones and air surveillance units have been deployed to key border points and flashpoints.
The US had earlier confirmed that its forces carried out targeted strikes against Islamic State-linked militants in Nigeria. While details of the operation remain classified, sources say the strikes inflicted heavy casualties on terrorist cells.
It was revealed by the military that any action that weakens terrorist networks is welcomed but emphasised the need for coordination to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty. It was also stated that troops are actively patrolling areas around Lake Chad and Sambisa Forest, where many insurgents fled.
The military urged citizens to report suspicious movements and avoid aiding criminals. It also reiterated its resolve to sustain pressure on terror groups and maintain peace, especially as the dry season favours military operations.
