The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused President Bola Tinubu of focusing more on generating tax revenue than addressing the welfare of Nigerians. In a statement ,the party criticised the administration’s decision to enforce new tax policies despite rising hardship and inflation.
According to the PDP, the government’s insistence on implementing controversial tax laws reflects its insensitivity to the suffering of citizens. It said rather than relieve economic pressure, the administration continues to burden people with more levies, while basic services like electricity, fuel, and food remain unaffordable.
The party also condemned what it described as an “unrelenting revenue chase” driven by the desperation to fund luxury lifestyles and wasteful governance. It noted that while Nigerians face job losses and insecurity, the government appears more interested in revenue targets than people’s needs.
It was argued that prioritising taxation over productivity and citizen welfare risks plunging the economy further into crisis. He urged the Tinubu administration to rethink its approach and focus on policies that boost local production, support small businesses, and create jobs.
The PDP also expressed support for calls by civil society groups and opposition lawmakers seeking a review or suspension of recent tax policies. It said sustainable governance should centre on reducing poverty, not increasing taxes on already struggling households.
The party warned that ignoring public outcry may trigger more resistance and erode the government’s legitimacy. It urged Tinubu to put Nigerians first and embrace more people-centered economic strategies.
