Traders In Shock as Fire breaks out at Arena Market in Lagos

Panic gripped traders at Arena Market, Oshodi, Lagos, after a fire broke out, destroying several shops and goods worth millions of naira. The fire reportedly started in the early hours of the day and quickly spread through the market, especially affecting a section that deals in clothing and household items.

Eyewitnesses said the blaze began from a faulty electrical connection in one of the shops. Despite early efforts by shop owners to put out the fire, it escalated due to flammable materials stored in many shops. Some traders broke down in tears as they watched their goods go up in flames.

Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Federal Fire Service, and the Nigerian Army Fire Team, arrived at the scene shortly after the alarm was raised. The firemen battled the flames for hours before finally bringing it under control.

Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that no lives were lost. She stated that investigations into the cause of the fire had begun and urged traders to follow fire safety guidelines.

Many shop owners blamed the incident on poor electrical wiring and lack of preventive measures in the market. They called on the Lagos State Government to help them recover their losses and improve infrastructure to avoid future disasters.

Officials have cordoned off the affected area for safety, while damage assessments continue. Traders now fear prolonged business disruption as the market recovers.
