Rivers Minister Nyesom Wike and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed have clashed over recent allegations of terrorism financing. The controversy began when Wike, speaking at a security meeting in Abuja, suggested that some state governors were indirectly aiding insecurity through questionable financial dealings and lack of transparency in local government spending.
Though he did not name anyone, Governor Mohammed reacted swiftly, calling the remarks “unfounded and reckless.” He accused Wike of playing politics with national security and demanded evidence to support the claims. Mohammed insisted that Bauchi maintains a clear record in financial management and remains committed to national security.
In a sharp rebuttal, Wike doubled down, saying leaders must be held accountable regardless of political affiliation. He urged security agencies to investigate governors suspected of enabling insecurity. Wike emphasized that political leadership must align with national interest, not personal or regional agendas.
The exchange has stirred heated debate among political observers. Some accuse both men of using security concerns as a political weapon ahead of the 2027 elections. Others argue the accusations highlight deeper issues of transparency and accountability at state and federal levels.
Analysts warn that public spats between high-ranking officials could weaken the government’s security efforts. They urge both leaders to resolve differences through proper channels and focus on collaboration.
The presidency has yet to comment on the growing tension between Wike and Governor Mohammed. Meanwhile, citizens and civil society groups have called for calm, urging leaders to put national unity above politics.
