The driver involved in the recent accident that injured British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua has been arraigned for manslaughter. The incident, which occurred in Ogun State, claimed one life and left Joshua with a leg fracture.
According to the Ogun State Police Command, the driver, identified as Adeniyi Omobolaji Kayode lost control of the vehicle while speeding along the Sagamu Interchange. The car veered off the road and collided with a stationary truck. The crash killed a bystander and seriously injured the heavyweight boxer, who was visiting Nigeria for the holidays.
Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed that Kayode was charged with reckless driving and manslaughter. He appeared before a magistrate court in Abeokuta, where the judge ordered his remand pending further investigation.
The state government has expressed concern over the rising number of road accidents linked to reckless driving. A statement from the governor’s office noted that efforts were ongoing to ensure improved road safety and driver accountability across the state.
Meanwhile, Anthony Joshua is reportedly recovering at a private facility in Lagos. Doctors say his injury will not affect his boxing career long-term, though his recovery could take several weeks. Fans and sports stakeholders have continued to send messages of support.
The court adjourned the case to January 20 for mention, while investigations continue. Authorities emphasized that no one is above the law and vowed to pursue justice for the victim’s family.
