The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has urged international actors to respect Venezuela’s sovereignty and political independence. It also called for dialogue and peaceful resolution of political tensions in the South American country.
In a statement released, ECOWAS said every nation has the right to choose its political path without external interference. The bloc noted that dialogue remains the most effective tool for resolving internal political disputes and avoiding instability.
The regional organisation expressed concern over the growing external pressure on Venezuela’s government. It warned that foreign interference could worsen the country’s political and economic crisis. ECOWAS reiterated its support for democracy, the rule of law, and national sovereignty as core principles guiding relations among nations.
The statement also referenced the importance of multilateral cooperation and mutual respect in international affairs. ECOWAS encouraged both the Venezuelan government and opposition groups to engage in constructive talks aimed at restoring unity and political order.
The body added that Africa and Latin America share a common history of resisting colonial domination and defending national sovereignty. Therefore, it called for solidarity in upholding those values in modern global politics.
ECOWAS concluded by appealing to all stakeholders, including international partners, to avoid actions that could fuel instability or undermine peace efforts in Venezuela. The group pledged to support any peaceful initiative that respects the will of the Venezuelan people.
