Former President Goodluck Jonathan has pledged to play a more active role in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to the party’s National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki (SAN).
Turaki made this known after a closed-door meeting with Jonathan in Abuja on Tuesday. He was accompanied by the PDP’s National Working Committee, former governors, founding members, and selected state chairmen.
Turaki stated, “We came this evening to visit one of our very important leaders, former President of Nigeria, President Ebele Jonathan. First, to introduce members of the newly elected National Working Committee to him, and then to tell him what we have been doing since our election at the National Convention held last November in Ibadan.”
He added that Jonathan reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, expressing gratitude for the party’s support and pledging to be more involved in its activities.
The meeting also addressed the party’s current challenges and prospects. Turaki emphasized the importance of unity and inclusivity within the PDP, stating, “We remain the leading opposition party in this country, and this new leadership of the PDP is taking the party back to the people, who are the true owners of the party.”
Regarding internal disputes, Turaki noted that not all political disagreements should be resolved through the courts and that the party is open to genuine reconciliation efforts.
The meeting signifies a strategic move by the PDP to consolidate its leadership and strengthen its position ahead of the upcoming elections.
