Heavy taxes, low wages, rising debt, threats to nation’s stability — NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has raised alarms over the growing economic challenges facing Nigerians. The labour group pointed to heavy taxes, low wages, and rising national debt as major threats to the country’s stability.

NLC officials said workers face increasing financial pressure as the government imposes more taxes while wages remain stagnant. They warned this trend worsens poverty and reduces citizens’ purchasing power.

The labour union also highlighted the country’s ballooning debt profile. According to the NLC, the rising debt puts a strain on public resources and limits the government’s ability to invest in critical sectors.

The NLC urged the government to review its fiscal policies. It called for measures to ease the tax burden on low-income earners and increase minimum wages to match inflation.

The group emphasized that ignoring these issues could lead to social unrest. It warned that worsening living conditions might trigger protests and strikes.

NLC leaders appealed for dialogue between the government and labour unions. They stressed the need for cooperative efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s social and economic stability.

The union also called on international partners to support Nigeria’s development efforts. They said collaborative action could help the country overcome its financial challenges.

In closing, the NLC stated that protecting workers’ welfare remains its top priority. It promised to continue advocating for fair policies that promote economic growth and social justice.
