Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him in 2015 because of his long-standing loyalty and track record in public service.
Speaking during an event in Lagos on Friday, Mohammed said Buhari recognized his dedication to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his work during the party’s opposition years. He noted that his role as the party’s national publicity secretary positioned him to communicate its ideals effectively, helping it win the 2015 election.
“I was not picked because I was the most qualified, but because I had consistently stood with the party and with Buhari during difficult times,” Mohammed said.
He also recalled moments leading up to his appointment, saying he never lobbied for the position. Instead, Buhari called him personally to inform him of the decision. “That call remains one of the most humbling moments of my life,” he added.
Mohammed described his tenure as minister as challenging but fulfilling. He said he was proud of the reforms he led in the media sector and the role he played in defending government policies.
He urged young Nigerians to stay committed to service and values, stressing that consistency often brings unexpected rewards. “Whatever you’re doing, do it well. Someone is watching,” he said.
The former minister stepped down in 2023 after eight years in office and currently serves in various advisory and public policy roles.
