Resident doctors suspend planned strike amid stakeholder engagements

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its planned nationwide strike following ongoing talks with key stakeholders.

In a statement on Friday, the association said the decision came after meaningful engagements with the Federal Ministry of Health and other relevant bodies aimed at addressing their demands.

Dr. Dele Abdullahi, NARD President, said the suspension was a show of goodwill to allow the government time to fulfill its promises. He noted that members would continue monitoring the situation closely and could resume strike action if talks fail.

The doctors had earlier threatened to down tools over issues including delayed salary payments, poor working conditions, and failure to implement agreements previously reached with the government.

“After a thorough review of discussions held so far and in consideration of the impact on Nigerians, we have decided to suspend the industrial action,” Abdullahi said.

The Federal Ministry of Health welcomed the decision and reiterated its commitment to resolving the issues raised. Officials said efforts were underway to clear outstanding salary arrears and improve welfare packages for health workers.

Hospitals across the country had begun activating contingency plans ahead of the now-suspended strike, with many fearing a disruption in services.

Health rights groups and patients also expressed relief over the suspension, urging both parties to prioritize lasting solutions and avoid future disruptions in the health sector.

NARD said it would reconvene in the coming weeks to review progress made and determine the next steps.
