The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video showing singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, allegedly being assaulted while in police custody.
The video, which circulated widely on social media platforms Tuesday, appeared to show uniformed officers physically confronting the controversial musician inside a police facility.
In a statement, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the command was aware of the video and had initiated a probe into the incident to determine its authenticity and context.
Hundeyin said the police leadership does not condone any form of misconduct or abuse by officers and pledged that those found culpable would be held accountable.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed a comprehensive investigation into the matter. Appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome,” the statement read.
Portable was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly refusing to pay a debt related to a luxury car purchase. According to police, he failed to complete the payment for a G-Wagon SUV and allegedly resisted arrest.
This is not the singer’s first brush with law enforcement. In 2023, he was arrested in Ogun State after failing to honor police invitations over a separate case.
The latest development has sparked public concern over the conduct of law enforcement officers and the rights of detainees.
The police said Portable remains in custody as investigations into both the video and the debt-related complaint continue.
