Federal Roads Spending Jumps 489% to N3.23 Trillion

Nigeria’s federal spending on road construction and rehabilitation surged by 489% to N3.23 trillion between 2015 and 2023, according to a report from the Budget Office of the Federation.

The data, covering actual releases to the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, revealed a sharp rise in infrastructure allocation under the Muhammadu Buhari administration. In 2015, the government released N51.58 billion for roads, but by 2023, that figure had climbed to over N303 billion.

The report attributed the increased funding to the federal government’s push to improve transportation networks and reduce logistics costs across the country. Several major highway projects, including the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road and the Second Niger Bridge, were financed during this period.

Despite the higher spending, many Nigerians have continued to complain about the state of roads across the country. Analysts say the funds, though substantial, have been challenged by cost overruns, delays, and poor maintenance.

Infrastructure experts have called for stronger transparency, project monitoring, and public-private partnerships to ensure value for money. They also stressed the need for state governments to complement federal efforts.

The report also noted that future budgets may prioritize road projects critical to trade corridors, security, and economic development, especially under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Nigeria’s total capital expenditure has continued to rise, with road infrastructure accounting for a significant portion. However, stakeholders say quality, not just quantity of spending, remains key.
