Nigeria’s military chief warns Gumi, others against supporting bandits

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has issued a stern warning to Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi and other public figures over comments that appear to support or defend bandits.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja, Musa said the military will no longer tolerate statements that embolden criminal elements responsible for terrorizing communities across the country. He stressed that anyone seen aiding or justifying the activities of armed groups would be treated as an accomplice.

“The law is clear — aiding terrorists in any form is a crime,” Musa said. “We are focused on restoring peace, and we urge Nigerians, especially influential figures, to support our efforts, not undermine them.”

The warning comes days after Gumi publicly criticized military operations and advocated for dialogue with bandits. His remarks drew widespread backlash from Nigerians who see them as sympathetic to criminals responsible for kidnappings and killings.

Musa emphasized that the military is working tirelessly to protect citizens, often in dangerous and difficult conditions. He called on religious and community leaders to speak responsibly and support the fight against insecurity.

Security agencies have been directed to monitor such statements closely and take legal action where necessary.

Gen. Musa’s comments reflect growing concerns within Nigeria’s security architecture about public rhetoric that could hinder counter-insurgency operations or embolden non-state actors.
