Residents of Ebute Metta have appealed to the Lagos State government to urgently construct proper drainage systems to address persistent flooding that has disrupted lives and damaged property in the area.
The residents said seasonal rains routinely leave streets submerged, forcing water into homes and businesses, displacing families and increasing the risk of waterborne diseases. They blamed the situation on the absence of functional drainage channels and the collapse or blockage of existing ones.
Several residents told reporters that flooding has worsened in recent years, making movement difficult and causing losses to household items and small businesses. Some said children are often unable to attend school during heavy rains, while traders shut shops as floodwaters rise.
Community leaders called on state authorities to include Ebute Metta in ongoing urban renewal and flood-control projects, saying proper drainage would significantly reduce the impact of rainfall and improve public health.
Officials of the Lagos State government were not immediately available for comment. However, the state has repeatedly said it is investing in drainage and flood-mitigation projects across flood-prone communities, urging residents to stop dumping refuse in waterways.
