A magistrates’ court in Sagamu, Ogun State, on Monday granted bail to Adeniyi Kayode, the driver who conveyed former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua and adjourned the case to Feb. 25, 2026.
Kayode was admitted to bail in the sum of 5 million naira ($5,400), with two sureties. He is standing trial over a road crash that killed Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.
The 46-year-old defendant was arraigned on Jan. 2 before Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun on a four-count charge, including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention resulting in bodily harm and property damage, and driving without a valid national driver’s license.
Prosecutors said the offenses contravene provisions of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.
At Monday’s hearing, prosecution counsel Nijiwe Richard sought an adjournment to allow the case file to be transmitted to the Ogun State attorney general’s office through the Department of Public Prosecutions for legal advice. Defense counsel Abiodun Olalekan opposed the request, saying the defense was ready to proceed.
In her ruling, the magistrate granted the prosecution’s application and adjourned the matter to Feb. 25.
The accident occurred on Dec. 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Motorway, when a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua, Kayode and the two aides collided with a stationary truck. Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries.
Joshua was later discharged from the hospital after doctors declared him clinically fit to continue recovery at home. He subsequently visited a funeral home in Lagos with his mother to pay last respects to Ayodele and Ghami before their bodies were repatriated to the United Kingdom.
