Police intensify crackdown on illegal number plates, siren abuse in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has stepped up enforcement against vehicles operating with illegal number plates, the misuse of temporary tags, and the unauthorized use of sirens and amber lights across the state, police said Tuesday.

The command said it has launched intelligence-led checks targeting vehicles bearing fake, altered, covered, invalid or improperly affixed plates, as well as those unlawfully using car dealers’ plates.

Police spokesman Oluseyi Babaseyi said in a statement that the operation is aimed at safeguarding lives, preventing crime and improving public safety. He said such vehicles are frequently exploited to facilitate criminal activity and pose serious risks on the roads.

Offenders will be identified, arrested and prosecuted in line with existing laws, Babaseyi said, adding that the measures are intended to promote road safety.

He said specialized units, including the Motor Traffic Department, the Monitoring Unit and the X-Squad, have been deployed to ensure professional and lawful enforcement. Area commanders and divisional police officers are supervising the operations to ensure fairness, transparency and compliance with approved guidelines, he added.

The state’s police commissioner, Lanre Ogunlowo, urged residents to cooperate with officers, comply with traffic and safety regulations and avoid patronizing suspicious vehicles.

Ogunlowo advised the public to use only recognized motor parks and designated pick-up points, saying the enforcement drive is focused on preventing crime, maintaining public order and protecting lives. He also called on residents to report suspicious activities or security concerns through the command’s emergency lines.
