Sit-at-home: AAC faults Soludo over Onitsha market closure

The African Action Congress (AAC) in Anambra State has criticised Gov. Chukwuma Soludo over the closure of the Onitsha market, describing the move as insensitive to the welfare of traders and residents amid ongoing security challenges.

In a statement issued Monday, the party’s state publicity secretary, Chinedu Anthony, said the decision was taken without adequate consideration for those whose livelihoods depend on daily commercial activities.

Anthony said shutting down businesses under the prevailing security situation was illogical and could further expose vulnerable citizens to hardship rather than address the root causes of insecurity.

“This decision, announced without adequate consideration for the welfare of traders and residents, is unacceptable and tone-deaf to the security realities in Anambra State,” the statement said.

The AAC questioned the rationale for closing markets while, it said, political office holders move with armed escorts, leaving ordinary citizens to cope without sufficient protection.

“Is it fair to punish traders for the state’s security lapses?” the party asked, urging the governor to focus on tackling insecurity instead of jeopardising livelihoods.

The party argued that market closures would not curb crime and called for more effective policing and community engagement as lasting solutions.
