Bridge railing collapses in Ogun, injures roadside trader

A roadside trader was injured on Wednesday after a railing attached to a bridge under construction collapsed in the Ojuore area of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, officials said.

The trader, whose identity was not immediately known, was injured about 4 p.m. when a section of the railing gave way and fell on him, according to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, or TRACE.

TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi said the man was trapped beneath the debris before being rescued by passersby, TRACE officials and site engineers.

“The victim sustained serious injuries after being crushed and trapped under the fallen railing,” Akinbiyi said, citing eyewitness accounts. He added that officials from TRACE and the police acted quickly to remove the trader from the scene.

The trader’s family later took him to an undisclosed hospital for treatment, Akinbiyi said.

Efforts were ongoing to clear the fallen railing from the site, while TRACE officials and police remained in the area to manage traffic and ensure public safety.

The incident has renewed concerns over safety standards at construction sites. In July 2025, the Lagos State Safety Commission shut down a construction site in Lekki operated by Monterosa Construction Company after a crane accident killed a worker, Rotimi Adesina. Adesina, believed to be the crane operator, was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to Evercare Hospital in Lekki Phase One.
