Stay true to Fela Kuti’s legacy, Yomi Fabiyi urges Wizkid

Nigerian actor and filmmaker Yomi Fabiyi has called on music star Wizkid to uphold the legacy of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti in his work.

Fabiyi, speaking during a media interview on Tuesday, said that artists have a responsibility to preserve the values and messages embedded in the music and activism of Kuti, who remains an iconic figure in Nigeria and globally.

“Wizkid is one of the biggest names in African music today. He should continue to reflect the fearless creativity and social consciousness that Fela represented,” Fabiyi said.

He added that while innovation is important, contemporary artists must also honor the cultural and political heritage that shaped Nigeria’s music scene.

Wizkid, who has won multiple international awards, has often cited Fela as an inspiration, blending Afrobeat influences with modern pop and Afro-fusion sounds.

Fabiyi’s comments come amid renewed discussions in Nigeria about preserving cultural heritage in the arts.
