Lagos shuts down Ladipo Spare Parts Market over environmental violations

The Lagos State government has closed the Ladipo Spare Parts Market, a major auto parts hub in the Mushin area of the city, citing repeated environmental violations.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the closure Sunday in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. He said the market, located along the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road on the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway, was sealed over indiscriminate waste disposal and illegal street trading.

Wahab said authorities found refuse dumped on road medians and highways surrounding the market, describing the action as part of the state’s zero-tolerance approach to environmental infractions.

The closure is part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State government to enforce environmental laws, curb improper waste disposal and discourage street trading across the state. Ladipo Market has previously been sanctioned for similar offenses.

In 2023, the government reopened the market after traders complied with environmental and sanitation requirements and met waste management standards. At the time, Wahab said the administration of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu places a high priority on environmental cleanliness, public health and safety under its THEMES Plus development agenda.

Sunday’s action reflects renewed enforcement by state authorities amid continued concerns over noncompliance at the market.
