Govt closes Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway for repairs

The Lagos State Government has announced a partial closure of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway for four weeks to allow rehabilitation work by the Federal Ministry of Works.

The closure begins Wednesday, Feb. 11, and will affect sections between U-Turn Bus Stop and Sango Tollgate on both inbound and outbound lanes, according to a statement Tuesday by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi.

“The rehabilitation work is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, and end on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, spanning a period of four weeks,” the statement said.

Osiyemi said the project will be carried out in two phases to reduce traffic disruption.

Phase One, affecting Abeokuta-bound traffic, will run from Feb. 11 to March 4 and cover the stretch from U-Turn Bus Stop inward to Sango Tollgate. During this period, traffic from Lagos and Abule-Egba toward Abeokuta and Sango Tollgate will be diverted to one half of the carriageway, about 20 meters from the active work zone, and restored after the work area.

Rehabilitation will be done one lane at a time. After work is completed on the first half, traffic will be redirected to the rehabilitated section while repairs continue on the remaining half. Motorists on the Lagos-bound carriageway will maintain free-flowing traffic during Phase One.

Phase Two will take place from March 4 to March 11 and will affect Lagos-bound traffic between Obadeyi Bus Stop and Ekoro Junction. During this phase, traffic from Abeokuta and Sango Tollgate toward Lagos and Abule-Egba will be diverted to one half of the road, about 20 meters from the work zone, with normal flow restored after construction.

As in Phase One, work will be executed in halves, with traffic redirected to completed sections as repairs progress. Motorists traveling toward Abeokuta will maintain uninterrupted movement during this phase.

Osiyemi said traffic management measures will be in place throughout the project and advised motorists to plan their trips, obey traffic signs and cooperate with traffic officials.

He appealed for patience and understanding during the rehabilitation, describing the repairs as essential for road users.
