Historic Milestone: Dangote Refinery Reaches Full 650,000 bpd Capacity

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery said it has restored and optimized two major processing units, marking what it described as a significant operational milestone for Africa’s largest oil refining facility.

The refinery said its Crude Distillation Unit and Motor Spirit production block are now operating at optimal performance following a scheduled maintenance exercise. It has begun a 72-hour series of performance test runs in collaboration with technology licensor UOP to validate efficiency and ensure compliance with global standards.

Chief Executive Officer David Bird said the integration and stabilization of the units reflect the refinery’s engineering and operational capabilities.

“Our teams have demonstrated exceptional precision and expertise in stabilizing both the CDU and MS Block, and we are pleased to see them functioning at optimal efficiency,” Bird said in a statement. He added that the testing phase would validate the plant under real operating conditions and expressed confidence in the refinery’s ability to deliver consistent output.

According to Bird, the CDU and MS Block — which include the naphtha hydrotreater, isomerization unit and reformer unit — are operating at the facility’s full nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day. He said additional processing units are scheduled to begin performance test runs in a second phase starting next week.

The refinery said it supplied between 45 million and 50 million liters of Premium Motor Spirit, or gasoline, daily during the recent festive period. With the restored units, it said it has the capacity to supply up to 75 million liters of gasoline per day to the domestic market as needed.

The company said the milestone supports its goal of strengthening Nigeria’s energy security, reducing reliance on fuel imports and positioning the country as a net exporter of refined petroleum products.
