The Ogun State Police Command said it plans to arrest and prosecute a TikTok user, identified as Mirabel, after she allegedly admitted that her earlier rape allegation was false.
Mirabel made the admission during a recorded phone conversation with social media personality VeryDarkMan also known as VDM. The audio, shared online on Thursday, captured her acknowledging that parts of her initial claim were untrue.
“Yes, sir, please help me, I am very sorry,” she said after being confronted with messages she had earlier attributed to her alleged attacker.
During the exchange, she also admitted creating a threatening TikTok account herself to support her claims.
“I have been taking drugs, and I was not thinking clearly when I posted the videos,” she said.
A police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly, said officers were at the hospital where Mirabel was receiving treatment.
The source said she would be taken into custody upon discharge and charged in court.
“The divisional police officer and some senior officers are currently at the hospital where she is admitted. Once she is discharged, she will be taken into custody, and a charge will be prepared against her for trial,” the source said, adding that the move is intended to deter similar cases.
Mirabel had earlier alleged on TikTok that she was attacked and raped by a stranger who forced his way into her apartment in the Ogijo area of Ogun State. The claim sparked widespread outrage online, with calls for action against sexual violence.
In a statement on Wednesday, police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi said the commissioner of police directed the divisional police officer in Ibafo to contact Mirabel after the report surfaced.
Babaseyi said Mirabel reported the case at the Ibafo Police Station, where preliminary findings indicated the alleged incident occurred within the Ogijo jurisdiction.
“She was promptly escorted to a medical facility for assessment and urgent attention. Following preliminary treatment, she was conveyed to the Ogijo Police Station for proper documentation and continuation of investigative procedures,” Babaseyi said.
She added that due to Mirabel’s condition, she was referred for further medical care to aid her recovery and support the investigation.
Earlier, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency said it had contacted a close friend of the woman, who confirmed she had been discharged from the hospital.
The agency noted that the alleged incident occurred in Ogun State and was outside its jurisdiction, adding that relevant information had been forwarded to appropriate authorities.
When contacted Thursday for comment on the latest development, the police spokesperson said the command was still reviewing the matter and would issue an official update.
