Yobe State Gov. Mai Mala Buni has approved more than 398 million naira for the 2026 Ramadan feeding program and Tafsir across the state, officials said Friday.
The initiative, to be implemented by the state Ministry of Religious Affairs and Ethical Re-Orientation, is aimed at supporting vulnerable residents during the holy month.
Authorities expanded the number of feeding centers to 130 across the state’s 17 local government areas, up from 101 last year. Each center is expected to provide iftar meals for 100 people daily throughout Ramadan.
A breakdown of the approval shows that more than 338 million naira was allocated for the procurement of rams and cooking condiments, while 60 million naira was set aside for allowances for Muslim clerics conducting Tafsir sessions.
In addition, 2,300 bags of rice and 400 jerrycans of cooking oil were approved for distribution to the centers.
Speaking at the launch of the distribution exercise in Damaturu, Commissioner for Religious Affairs and Ethical Re-Orientation Yusuf Umar praised the governor for expanding the program, saying it would allow more residents to benefit.
He said the initiative has helped ease the burden on families and urged officials overseeing the centers to ensure transparency and accountability. Umar warned that there would be no tolerance for diversion or mismanagement of materials.
Ramadan, observed by Muslims worldwide, is a month of fasting, prayer and reflection and is one of the five pillars of Islam.
