Lagos Assembly Moves to Resolve Demolition Dispute in Two Weeks

The Lagos State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its directive halting further actions in Makoko and Shogunle communities, where demolitions had previously taken place.

Lawmakers said efforts to reconcile with affected residents would be concluded within two weeks.

The Assembly also adopted a recommendation from the special adviser to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on E-GIS, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, establishing a 250-meter setback from the Third Mainland Bridge and an additional 250-meter buffer beyond the power line corridor, effectively banning development within the designated areas.

Speaking Thursday at a meeting with community leaders, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, represented by Majority Leader Noheem Adams, said the Assembly, in collaboration with the Lagos State Building Control Agency and the E-GIS Office, had directed each affected community to form a 10-member committee.

Adams said the committees should include women, youths, students and traditional leaders to help achieve a lasting resolution.

He added that the State Executive Council is finalizing compensation arrangements for affected residents while dialogue continues.

Reacting after the meeting, Bayo Adefuye, chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, noting that relief materials and palliatives had been distributed by state and local authorities.

He said the Assembly’s plan to conclude its assignment within two weeks was achievable and urged residents to comply with directives, warning community leaders against actions that could undermine the resolution process.
