Tragedy in Ibadan: UI Med Student Dies After Ingesting Insecticide

A 300-level medical student at the University of Ibadan has died after ingesting an insecticide, hospital officials said.

The student, whose name was withheld, consumed a substance identified as “Sniper” on Sunday night and was later found on the ground floor of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall, reportedly foaming at the mouth and disoriented.

Fellow students alerted authorities, who arranged for his transfer to a campus clinic, where he was initially stabilized with oxygen and intravenous fluids before being moved to the emergency unit of the University College Hospital Ibadan.

Hospital spokesperson Funmi Adetuyibi confirmed the death.

“The boy passed away on Sunday evening,” she said. “The student was brought in based on the report that he consumed Sniper, and the hospital responded accordingly. Sadly, he did not survive.”

The student’s parents, who live in Akure in Ondo State, were contacted and arrived at the hospital before his death. They reportedly raised concerns about possible poisoning, but his roommates said he admitted ingesting the substance. They also described recent behavioral changes, including social withdrawal, poor class attendance and avoiding calls from family members.

The incident comes amid renewed concern over suicide-related content on social media. Advocacy group Suicide Is No Solution Initiative warned that such material could trivialize self-harm and undermine prevention efforts.

In a statement Monday, the group criticized a rise in skits depicting suicide, including content linked to an online dispute involving influencer VeryDarkMan and content creator King Mitchy.

Project coordinator Toye Arulogun said suicide is a serious public health issue and should not be used for entertainment.
