Kwankwaso Decries Maiduguri Attack, Urges Tough Action on Terrorists

A former governor of Kano state, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Tuesday condemned the deadly bombings in Maiduguri that killed at least 23 people and injured more than 100 others.

In a statement, Kwankwaso described the attacks as “horrific” and warned they signal a possible resurgence of terrorism in Nigeria’s northeast.

“I am deeply saddened by the multiple suicide bombings … which claimed the lives of 23 innocent people and injured over 100 others,” he said, citing figures from the Nigeria Police Force.

The explosions occurred Monday evening at the Monday Market area and near a security post at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, according to authorities and eyewitnesses.

Kwankwaso said the attacks threaten the relative peace recorded in the region in recent years and urged both federal and state governments to take urgent action.

“Now is not the time for complacency,” he said, calling for increased support and resources for security forces to combat militant groups.

He also expressed condolences to the victims, their families and the people of Borno state.

“My heart goes out to the bereaved families, the injured and all the people of Borno state,” he said.

Emergency responders, including the Federal Fire Service, were deployed to the scene shortly after the explosions, officials said.

Witnesses reported panic in the area as casualties were evacuated to nearby medical facilities, including the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri.

Authorities said investigations into the attacks are ongoing.
