The Nigeria Immigration Service has temporarily removed several senior officers following allegations of widespread extortion along the Lagos-Seme border corridor.
Comptroller General Kemi Nandap on Friday ordered the immediate suspension of comptrollers overseeing the affected commands after online reports detailed multiple instances of misconduct.
In a statement signed by the agency’s spokesman, Akinsola Akinlabi, Nandap condemned the actions, calling them a direct violation of the service’s professional standards.
“The Comptroller-General unequivocally condemns the actions depicted in these reports,” the statement said. “Such conduct is unacceptable and stands in direct violation of the core values, ethics and operational standards of the Service.”
The agency said it has launched a formal investigation to identify all officers involved in the alleged racketeering and ensure swift disciplinary action.
“The CGI has temporarily relieved the comptrollers in charge of the affected commands of their duties and has directed a thorough investigation,” the statement said. “This is to identify all officers involved and ensure that appropriate disciplinary measures are applied with immediate effect.”
The Seme border, a key transit point between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, has long faced scrutiny over the conduct of security personnel.
The NIS said it is strengthening internal monitoring systems as part of efforts to restore public trust.
“The Service remains committed to delivering professional, transparent and efficient services at all points of entry and exit,” Nandap said. “It will not condone any act that undermines public trust or tarnishes the integrity of the Service.”
The agency urged the public to report abuses through its official contact channels and social media platforms, adding that reforms are underway to improve accountability and service delivery while facilitating lawful migration.
