Air Peace Breaks Silence on Gatwick Chaos, Denies Passenger Abandonment

Air Peace Limited said a disruption to its London Gatwick–Lagos flight on May 1 was caused by a bird strike and denied claims that passengers were abandoned.

In a statement posted Saturday on its official X account, the airline said a viral social media video alleging that passengers were left stranded without communication or care did not reflect the full circumstances.

The airline said the aircraft was grounded immediately after the bird strike, which it described as a recognized force majeure event in aviation, to allow for comprehensive safety checks.

“Safety is not negotiable, and under no circumstance would we operate an aircraft without the required safety clearance,” the statement said.

Air Peace said passengers were promptly informed of the incident and the cancellation of the service, adding that hotel accommodation was provided at the Hilton London Gatwick Airport.

The airline acknowledged operational challenges, including airport congestion and delays involving ground handling services responsible for baggage retrieval.

It said baggage handling at international airports is managed by designated ground handling companies and is outside the airline’s direct control.

Rejecting claims that passengers were abandoned, the airline said communication was maintained throughout the disruption and that all affected travelers were offered accommodation while arrangements were being made to deploy another aircraft.

Air Peace also criticized what it described as unfair backlash over the incident, saying the flight captain provided timely updates to passengers.

While apologizing for the inconvenience, the airline urged understanding, noting that aviation operations involve multiple stakeholders and strict safety protocols.

It said it remains committed to passenger safety and comfort and will continue reviewing its processes to improve response to unexpected disruptions.
