NIESV Lagos Urges Reforms to Cut Housing Costs, Ease Rent Pressure

Professionals under the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), Lagos branch, have urged the government to introduce reforms and policies aimed at reducing the cost of building development and easing high rents in Nigeria’s cities.

Branch Chairman Tosin Kadiri made the appeal on Tuesday while speaking with journalists ahead of the chapter’s Estate Week in Lagos.

Kadiri said rent increases should be addressed not through price control laws, but by creating an enabling environment for property developers.

He said key measures should include reducing the cost of housing finance for developers, construction stakeholders and mortgage seekers.

“The government should ensure that the cost of housing financing is drastically reduced for developers, construction industry participants and end-users seeking mortgage loans to buy property,” he said.

Kadiri also said the branch’s activities during Estate Week would include charity visits to an orphanage, mentorship and training for students of Lagos State University of Science and Technology, as well as sports events.

He added that the chapter was focused on mentoring young professionals to strengthen the real estate sector and meet rising demand for expertise.

Kadiri stressed the importance of engaging only certified valuers in property transactions, pledging to uphold professional standards in the sector.

Vice Chairman Ayodeji Odeleye said the Lagos branch had partnered with the Association of Estate Agents in Nigeria to improve training, enhance industry standards and curb the activities of unqualified practitioners.

He said the collaboration aims to promote professionalism and ensure a safer, more regulated real estate environment.
