Children are nation’s future, Ebonyi First Lady declares

Wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Mrs. Mary-Maudline Uzoamaka Ogbonna Nwifuru, has described children as the “heartbeat of the nation” and the foundation upon which the future of society rests.

She stated this on Wednesday during the 2026 Children’s Day celebration held in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, where she called for greater inclusion, protection and empowerment of Nigerian children.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s celebration, “Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child,” the First Lady said the time had come for government, parents and stakeholders to ensure that every child, irrespective of background or physical ability, is given equal opportunity to succeed.

“If there is one truth that no society can ignore, it is this: a child today is the nation of tomorrow standing in front of us right now. Every smile we see, every dream spoken, and every little hand raised in hope carries the weight of our collective future,” she said.

Mrs. Nwifuru noted that children should not be seen merely as future leaders but as active contributors to nation-building whose voices and aspirations must be taken seriously in policy making and governance.

She reiterated her commitment towards child development and welfare in the state, stressing that her pet project, BERWO Foundation, had continued to implement programmes aimed at improving children’s health, education, nutrition and protection.

“Our interventions have focused on supporting vulnerable and indigent children, improving access to healthcare and education, and advocating strongly against child abuse, neglect, trafficking and all forms of violence against children. We are committed to ensuring that no child is left behind,” she stated.

The governor’s wife also urged children across the state to remain disciplined, focused and determined in the pursuit of their dreams, assuring them that they have the capacity to attain greatness.

“To our dear children, I encourage you to remain focused, disciplined and hopeful. Believe in your abilities, pursue your education with determination, and understand that your dreams are valid and achievable,” she added.

She further appealed to parents, guardians and teachers to continue nurturing children with love, discipline and proper guidance, while commending teachers for their sacrifices in shaping future leaders.

Mrs. Nwifuru called on Nigerians to embrace inclusion and build a society where every child, regardless of gender, social status or physical condition, can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development.
