The Osun State Police Command says it has launched an investigation into the attack on Accord Party chairman for Osogbo Local Government Area, Asimiyu Ajibola, who is receiving treatment after sustaining gunshot wounds in an apparent assassination attempt.
Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi said the attack occurred Wednesday at about 9:50 p.m. in the MDS area of Osogbo when two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on the victim.
He said police tactical and conventional units were immediately deployed to the scene following a distress call, and the victim was evacuated to a medical facility where he is being treated.
Medical personnel at UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital confirmed that Ajibola is in stable condition and responding to treatment.
Police said preliminary investigations led to the recovery of exhibits at the scene, which are being subjected to forensic analysis. Authorities have also launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects.
Osun State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan ordered a high-level investigation, directing all relevant units to identify and arrest those responsible.
“The command wishes to assure members of the public that no stone will be left unturned,” Ojelabi said, urging residents to remain calm and provide useful information to aid the investigation.
The Osun State Government also condemned the attack, saying Ajibola was initially taken to the hospital in critical condition after being shot while traveling with others in a vehicle.
Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Kolapo Alimi said eyewitnesses reported that gunmen chased the vehicle and fired repeatedly before the victims escaped to a nearby police station for safety.
He called on police to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation, describing the attack as a serious security breach with what he said appeared to be political undertones.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing.
