Police in Anambra State have arrested a couple accused of severely abusing a 10-year-old boy in Awada, Obosi, in Idemili North Local Government Area, authorities said Thursday.
The suspects, identified as 30-year-old Chisom Chukwukere and her husband, Chukwudi, were taken into custody following public outrage over a viral video showing the child with extensive injuries across his body.
Police said the couple allegedly used burning plastic to inflict severe burns on the victim.
The case drew widespread condemnation after footage of the injured boy circulated on social media, prompting calls for justice and stronger protection for children.
Authorities also placed the couple’s infant child in protective custody through the Anambra State Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare.
During questioning, Chisom reportedly appealed to police and ministry officials to release the infant to her, claiming the child was ill and required her care. A video circulating online showed her pleading with authorities to return the child.
The infant has since been placed in the care of a family member under the supervision of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare.
The case has sparked further public outrage, with many questioning how someone concerned about the welfare of her own child could allegedly inflict such injuries on another child.
Confirming the arrests, police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said investigations were ongoing and assured that all those found responsible would be prosecuted.
“The police remain steadfast in enforcing laws designed to protect children from abuse, neglect, exploitation and all forms of violence,” Ikenga said.
He added that Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu had reaffirmed the command’s commitment to working with government agencies, child protection organizations and community stakeholders to safeguard the rights, safety and welfare of children across the state.
“The Anambra State Police Command remains committed to promoting justice, compassion and the protection of human rights,” Ikenga said.
