Salah starts for Egypt against Australia in World Cup clash

Egypt captain Mohamed Salah has been named in the starting lineup for Friday’s FIFA World Cup round-of-32 match against Australia in Texas after recovering from a hamstring concern.

The former Liverpool forward was substituted during Egypt’s final group-stage match, a 1-1 draw against Iran, a week earlier, raising doubts about his availability.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan had said on Thursday that he was uncertain whether the 34-year-old would be fit to start, but included him in the lineup alongside Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush in attack.

Salah has scored one goal and provided two assists at the tournament in North America. He has also maintained an impressive scoring record for Egypt, averaging a goal every two appearances.

Both Egypt and Australia are seeking their first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match when they meet at the home of the Dallas Cowboys in Texas.

The winner will advance to the round of 16 to face either defending champion Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, or tournament debutant Cape Verde.
