Ronaldo Says 2026 World Cup Will Be His Last

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the final World Cup of his career, saying he is determined to enjoy every moment of the tournament.

The 41-year-old Portugal captain made the announcement on Sunday while speaking to reporters ahead of Portugal’s Round of 16 match against Spain.

“It’s about enjoying it as much as possible,” Ronaldo said.

“This will be my last World Cup, but let’s hope tomorrow isn’t my last game.”

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner said he would retire from international football without regrets because he has given everything to the sport.

“The day will come when I retire from international football. Whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano will leave with a clear conscience because I’ve given everything in football,” he said.

Ronaldo said his continued desire to play is driven by his love for the game rather than a need to prove himself.

“I play football because I love it. You have to enjoy every day,” he said, adding that he had scored three goals at the tournament.

The Portuguese forward has enjoyed another impressive World Cup campaign in the United States, Canada and Mexico. He became the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups after netting twice against Uzbekistan in the group stage and later scored from the penalty spot against Croatia in the Round of 32 for his first World Cup knockout-stage goal.

Ronaldo described the tournament as the most emotionally fulfilling World Cup of his career.

“It’s been fantastic. This is the World Cup I’ll remember the most because of people’s passion. Emotionally, it’s been the best, and I’ve enjoyed it very much,” he said.

Although he has never won the FIFA World Cup, Ronaldo said his legacy would not be determined by whether he lifts the trophy.

“I’m not going to be more or less Cristiano because I win the World Cup. We have the qualities to win, but only one country can win it. Age gives you maturity and experience,” he said.

Ronaldo, who is under contract with Al-Nassr FC until 2027, also expressed gratitude for the criticism he has faced throughout his career, saying it has helped him grow as a person.
