Diri Defects to APC, Citing Bayelsa’s Interest

In a political shake-up, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), defending the move as being in the best interest of his state.

Governor Diri, in a public address, emphasized that the political realignment aligns with the realities of governance and the need to position Bayelsa advantageously within Nigeria’s national framework. He asserted that the switch would enhance access to federal support and foster infrastructural and economic benefits for the state’s people.

Political analysts say the defection is part of a broader trend in Nigerian politics, where governors often align with the ruling federal party to leverage resources, secure political backing, or ensure smoother cooperation. Some see the move as strategic rather than ideological, aimed at consolidating power in a competitive environment.

However, the defection may deepen divides within local party structures. PDP loyalists in Bayelsa are reportedly frustrated, warning that Diri risks alienating grassroots support. Meanwhile, APC members see the welcome as a victory, strengthening the party’s reach in the Niger Delta region.

As political realignments accelerate nationwide, Diri’s defection is likely to reverberate through Bayelsa’s political landscape, influencing upcoming elections, resource allocations, and alliances not just in the state, but among neighbouring states and national decision-makers.
