PDP Condemns APC Over Alleged Role in Fubara’s Defection

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has publicly condemned the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of engineering the defection of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. The opposition party described the move as an act of desperation and a clear subversion of democratic values.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, the PDP expressed disappointment over Fubara’s defection, insisting that he was elected on the platform of the PDP and owes both the party and the electorate a duty to uphold that mandate. The party alleged that the APC’s involvement in the governor’s defection was a deliberate attempt to destabilize the PDP and consolidate power through questionable means.

According to the PDP, the APC’s strategy of luring elected officials from other parties is a threat to Nigeria’s democracy. “What we are witnessing is a calculated political raid meant to weaken the opposition and undermine the electorate’s will,” the statement read. The PDP emphasized that voters supported Fubara because of the party’s vision and manifesto, and not for any personal alliance with the APC.

The statement also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and civil society groups to take note of the trend of defections, which it claimed is gradually eroding the essence of democratic governance in the country.

Meanwhile, the APC has welcomed Fubara’s move, claiming it is proof of the party’s growing popularity and acceptance. However, the PDP dismissed this as propaganda, accusing the APC of using state resources and influence to sway public officers for political gain.

The PDP concluded by reaffirming its commitment to defending democratic ideals and urged its members to remain united and resist attempts to hijack their electoral victories through defection and manipulation.
