Labour Party Insists on Primaries for 2027 Presidential Ticket, No Automatic Slot for Obi

The Labour Party (LP) has announced that its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will not be handed an automatic ticket for the 2027 elections. According to party leaders, all aspirants, including Obi, must undergo due process and compete in a transparent primary election.

LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, made the statement during a press briefing on the party’s future political plans. He emphasized that while the party respects Obi’s contributions and popularity, its constitution requires internal democracy, and no individual is above the rules.

“The Labour Party is guided by democratic principles. We appreciate Mr. Obi’s role in 2023, but the party does not operate on personality-based politics. The ticket will be open to all qualified aspirants,” Ifoh stated.

This development comes amid speculation that Obi might be the party’s consensus candidate again in 2027. However, LP insists that allowing free and fair competition is key to maintaining credibility and unity within its ranks.

Supporters of Obi have expressed mixed reactions. While some believe the party should reward his loyalty and popularity with an automatic ticket, others support the decision to uphold internal democracy.

The LP leadership also reiterated its commitment to strengthening its grassroots structures and preparing early for the 2027 elections. According to them, the party’s goal is to build on its 2023 momentum and provide Nigerians with a viable alternative.

With this declaration, the stage is now set for a competitive primary season within the Labour Party as 2027 approaches.
