The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed an eight-count corruption charge against former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr. Chris Ngige. The former Anambra State governor is set to appear before the FCT High Court in Gwarimpa, Abuja, on Friday.
According to court documents dated October 31 and filed by EFCC lawyer Sylvanus Tahir (SAN) and his team, Ngige is accused of using his position as a minister to grant unfair advantages by awarding several government contracts to close associates and companies linked to him.
One of the charges claims that between 2015 and 2023, while overseeing the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Ngige awarded contracts worth over N366 million to Cezimo Nigeria Limited, a company allegedly owned by his associate, Ezebinwa Amarachukwu Charles.
The EFCC also listed other firms that allegedly received similar benefits, including Zitacom Nigeria Limited (N583 million), Jeff & Xris Limited (N362 million), Olde English Consolidated Limited (N668 million), and Shale Atlantic Intercontinental Services Limited (N161 million). All these companies are reportedly linked to individuals close to the former minister.
Ngige was arrested in Abuja on Wednesday and remains in EFCC custody ahead of his court appearance.
The charges fall under the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000. If convicted, Ngige could face legal penalties, including fines and imprisonment.
