Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has pledged to take decisive action against the growing problem of indiscriminate refuse dumping in Ibadan, promising that a lasting solution will be implemented soon to address environmental and public health concerns.
Makinde made the commitment during an engagement with community leaders and stakeholders in Ibadan, where residents expressed frustration over heaps of waste scattered across major roads, residential areas, and black spots across the city. The governor acknowledged that improper waste disposal has become a serious challenge affecting the quality of life of residents, the aesthetic appeal of the city, and the overall environment.
According to him, the state government has already begun consultations with relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Environment, local government officials, waste management contractors, and community representatives, to develop practical strategies that will curb the menace. He emphasized that ongoing assessments will inform policy and enforcement actions to ensure sustainable waste management practices across the state.
“We are fully aware of the pain and inconvenience this problem has created. Our administration remains committed to ensuring a clean and healthy environment for all residents. We will act swiftly, and the solution will be visible soon,” Makinde said.
The governor also advised residents to support the government’s efforts by avoiding littering, reporting illegal dumping sites, and embracing proper waste disposal habits. He noted that community participation is critical to the success of any environmental drive.
Stakeholders at the meeting expressed optimism that the government’s renewed focus on waste management will usher in positive changes, improve sanitation, and restore Ibadan’s status as a clean and vibrant city.
